Tiwa Savage Opens Up On Roc Nation New Deal

Singer Tiwa Savage, was recently interviewed on Apple Music Beats 1 Radio, where she touched on so many topics to include her latest deal with Jay Z’s Roc Nation.

Tiwa, who recently inked an international management deal, with rapper Jay Z’s, Roc Nation, sat down with OAP, Ebro Darden, for the interview, where she shared her views on African music and it’s current status globally.

Speaking on African Music:
When we speak of Africa, we have to always remember that it is a continent. And so you have South Africa, East Africa, West Africa, North Africa, and it’s just a huge continent with different cultures, and different languages. So right now, the prominent music out of Africa seems to be Afrobeat or Afropop (depending on what you want to call it). Essentially it’s just music with African elements. Whether it be the rhythm, or maybe the native language. As long as you can have one or two of those, then it tends to be associated with Africa.
Africans love to dance, it’s so rhythm based. It’s very very heavy with drums, basslines as well. I think everybody essentially, we all have an element of it, but we are all influenced by the music coming out of America, we are influenced by Hip-Hop, we are influenced by Soul Music, R&B, and I think that is the beauty of it; Blending both markets together. So when you say African-American, truly, that’s where it should be, between the African and the American world, just blending both together.
On her songwriting deal with Sony Music:
I grew up in the UK as well, and it wasn’t cool to be African. I used to be bullied and stuff. When you go to clubs in Africa, they would play Hip-hop 90%, and maybe 10% African music. Now it is literally the other way round, so it’s a great thing that Africans in the diaspora are listening to African music.
I have been recording music for 8 years, I am signed to Sony/ATV as well, so I wrote a couple of records out here, so I co-wrote ‘A couple of forevers’ for Chrisette Michelle, ‘Collard & Greens’ for Fantazia. So I have been writing for a long time.  Now I am focused on Afrobeat.
On collaborations:
The beautiful thing is, when American artistes come to Africa, and you know English isn’t our first language, but you see people reciting the lyrics to Jay Z songs, and it’s a feeling, they might not even understand what the whole thing is. But it wouldn’t be able to happen in reverse. There shouldn’t be a barrier just because you don’t understand what Mafikizolo is saying or Tiwa is saying. Music is an emotion, and I am really happy that you guys are putting that light on, now that we have the spotlight to show the world what we can really do.

On her new deal with Roc Nation:
I met B High (Jay Z’s cousin, and Roc Nation chief of mobile strategies), I got a call, and he mentioned it and I (makes a skeptical sound)…He was serious. I don’t know if it you’ve ever met him, but he is serious.  And I love the fact that they are not trying to change me. They really just want to bring what I already have to offer to the rest of the world, and they truly believe in the movement. So yeah, I’m really excited about it.
The reason why we did not really make too much noise about it is because a lot of people come over from Africa and they say they’ve got this deal and that deal, and then nothing happens. We just wanted to do it the proper way, get it official. I didn’t want to do that to my people. I wanted them to really believe that it was really happening, so we wanted to wait for the right time, and the time is now.

FUTA Suspends Four Students Involved in Internet Scam

The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has indefinitely suspended four students of the institution, who were arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the roles they played in an alleged N16 million Internet fraud. Out of the five suspected undergraduate scammers that were arrested, 4 are from (FUTA) while 1 is from Adekunle Ajashin University, Akungba. They allegedly swindled unsuspecting foreigners and others to the tune of N16M by engaging in fraudulent activities of obtaining money by false pretenses through scam mails.

A statement released by the Head, Information and Protocol Unit of FUTA, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, said the university’s vice chancellor approved the sanction based on the school rules, which stipulate indefinite suspension for students arrested and being investigated for allegation of criminal activities. Dangote Falls Out of World's Top 100 Rich List as Naira Crashes

Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote, has dropped out of the list of top 100 richest people in the world. This is largely due to the devaluation of the Naira. Dangote who owns the second largest sugar-refinery in the world, remains richer than American billionaires, Donald Trump, and Oprah Winfrey who ranks as the second richest black woman in the world.

Dangote is now worth $11.1 billion, while Trump and Oprah are estimated at $4.5 billion and $3.1 billion, respectively.

The devaluation of the Naira against the dollar from about 198 to about 300, has eroded about a quarter of Dangote’s wealth as he continues to invest heavily in Nigeria. At the launch of the new foreign exchange regime on June 23rd, Dangote fell from number 46 on the world billionaire list to 71 and has continued to drop as the Naira continues to crash.

According to Bloomberg billionaires, Dangote, who was worth $15.4 billion (N3.05 trillion) in March, is now worth $11.1 billion (N3.3 trillion) - richer in naira but poorer in dollars.

Is Pokemon Go a Death Sentence for Black Man

This week has been a catastrophe for Blackness. Two men, Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, were killed by police officers within 24 hours of each other. Neither had committed a crime that was punishable by death nor did they put any officers lives at risk. It’s inexcusable, unjustifiable, and is perpetuated by a system that disproportionately targets Black Men. Later in the week, 5 police officers in Dallas were killed in the line of duty by a single gunman during an otherwise peaceful protest concerning those cases of lethal force.* All of these deaths are completely senseless.

Those are the facts.

In another sector of the internet this week, a mobile game called Pokemon GO was released. Being of the geekish human variety, I was inexplicably excited about this game. They were giving me a chance to catch ’em all once again, this time in the real world using an obvious combination of technology and magic. I downloaded it immediately when I saw the news of its release.

Even in the wake of such sadness, the iconic theme music started and it was impossible for me to prevent the delighted grin from taking over my face. As I was introduced to Professor Willow, who tasked me with assisting him with his research by catching as many Pokemon that I could, I giggled like a middle school girl being approached by her secret crush on the schoolyard.

After capturing my first Pokemon, I started taking notes on the interface and how the game would work. It seemed straightforward enough. Using GPS, my avatar marks my position on a simplified version of what is essentially Google Maps. Little grass confetti animations show me where Pokemon might be located nearby. Seems reasonable that I should walk there and potentially this would allow me to catch one. I see a few that seem to be located in my apartment complex, but unfortunately it’s getting late (around 10:30 pm) and I have a good ole’ American nine-to-five job. Like a normal adult, I started up my computer, played a couple hours of Overwatch, poked around on Facebook for another hour while in bed, then went to sleep.

Early the next morning, shortly after my partner left for work, I couldn’t help but to give Pokemon Go another shot. I had about an hour before I needed to be at work so this seemed like the perfect opportunity. I threw some clothes on, fired up the app, and set out for an adventure.

I spent less than 20 minutes outside. Five of those minutes were spent enjoying the game. One of those minutes I spent trying to look as pleasant and nonthreatening as possible as I walked past a somewhat visibly disturbed white woman on her way to the bus stop. I spent the other 14 minutes being distracted from the game by thoughts of the countless Black Men who have had the police called on them because they looked “suspicious” or wondering what a second amendment exercising individual might do if I walked past their window a 3rd or 4th time in search of a Jigglypuff.

When my brain started combining the complexity of being Black in America with the real world proposal of wandering and exploration that is designed into the gamplay of Pokemon GO, there was only one conclusion. I might die if I keep playing.

The breakdown is simple:

There is a statistically disproportionate chance that someone could call the police to investigate me for walking around in circles in the complex.
There is a statistically disproportionate chance that I would be approached by law enforcement with fear or aggression, even when no laws have been broken.
There is a statistically disproportionate chance that I will be shot while reaching for my identification that I always keep in my back right pocket.
There is a statistically disproportionate chance that more shots will be fired and I will be dead before any medical assistance is available.

The premise of Pokemon GO asks me to put my life in danger if I chose to play it as it is intended and with enthusiasm. Let’s just go ahead and add Pokemon GO to the extremely long list of things white people can do without fear of being killed, while Black people have to realistically be wary.

Saudi Clerics Renew Fatwa Against Pokemon Go

Some people playing Pokémon Go today are probably too young to remember that Saudi clerics declared a fatwa, or Islamic religious ban, on Pokémon back in 2001. Unluckily for them, the resurgence of the augmented-reality version of the game has clerics renewing the ban to remind everyone that the pious do not wander around seeking imaginary animals.

The original fatwa claimed that Pokémon encouraged blasphemy and gambling. Since card symbols allegedly include the star of David, triangles, and crosses, the cards are promoting Zionism, freemasonry, and Christianity, respectively. The edict also said that the game promoted gambling because people bought and sold cards (there may be a point here, given that loaded Pokémon Go accounts are being auctioned for thousands) and the storyline itself promotes the natural theory of evolution.

The renewal by the Saudi clerics have been echoed by officials in Egypt and Kuwait. Officials in the United Arab Emirates have warned that the GPS-based game could make people vulnerable, which is exactly right given that armed robbers have used Pokemon to lure victims.

Of course, not everyone agrees. While topic clerical body of Indonesia, which has the largest Muslim population in the world, warned that the game could make people “intoxicated,” businesses in the country continue to cash in and some aren’t deterred.

“I will not stop playing unless the reason is realistic,” 24-year-old Indonesian radio host Mohammad Resja Ilham, told Reuters. He plays up to five hours a day but seems to be in no danger of becoming a freemason so far.

SAD - Teenager Shot Dead While Searching for Creatures in Pokemon Go

A teenager has been killed in what could be the first death of someone playing Pokemon Go.

Jerson Lopez de Leon, who was 18, was ambushed and died after being shot while he was playing the game with cousin Daniel Moises Picen, 17.

It still isn’t clear why the two were attacked, police said. But they have speculated that it may have been that the attackers found the teenagers using the app itself – which has location features that make it possible to encourage people to go to specific areas, or to locate players.

The two were searching for Pokemon on a street in Chiquimula, 120 miles from Guatemala City.

Police found almost 20 bullet casings at the scene of a murder and are now looking for the occupants of a van that was seeing driving from the scene.

The two were walking alongside a railway line when they were shot at, local reports said. Person later died in hospital.

Jerson’s mother, Rosalinda, said that the teenager had left the house to go out and play the augmented reality game.

"I don't know why my son left the house,” she said. “He was already in bed when his cousin sent him a message asking him to go out and download a game a few blocks from the house."

The death appears to be the first one related to the Pokemon Go game, though there is no suggestion that it actually had any responsibility for what happened.

But it is just the latest in a run of problems that have hit people looking for Pokemon. That has included people falling off cliffs and others being lured to be robbed at gunpoint as they search for Pokemon.

The game itself has had issues, because of the huge amount of people looking to play it. Those have included times the game doesn’t work at all, partly because of cyber attacks, and issues within the game.
